Reforms for buildings with combustible cladding

Shortly after the Grenfell Tower fire tragedy, the NSW Government announced a wide-ranging fire safety package in response to the fire safety risks posed by external wall cladding.

As part of this package, the government committed to a new regulation that will require owners of buildings with combustible external wall cladding to inform state government and undertake an independent fire safety assessment within set deadlines.

The draft regulation, Environmental Planning and Assessment Amendment (Identification of Buildings with Combustible Cladding) Regulation 2017, has been prepared to put these requirements into law.

The exhibition package also includes an Explanation of Intended Effect for proposed amendments to eight State Environmental Planning Policies, which will limit the use of combustible cladding as exempt development, that is without planning or building approval.

The draft regulation and Explanation of Intended Effect are on exhibition for public comment until Friday 16 February 2018.
